Kate Spade built a "lifestyle brand" in the 1990s before the term even existed
By standard definition, Kate Spade represented the epitome of success. She appeared happy, was married to a handsome famous husband, and together they had a beautiful healthy daughter. Having an estimated net worth of $150 million, Coach recently decided to purchase the Kate Spade brand raising her net worth to a whopping $2.4 billion.
On the outside, life looked good for Ms. Spade. But while most of us struggle with a dream deferred, wishing and hoping to bring our dream into fruition; Ms. Spade built her billion-dollar fashion empire from the living room of her one-bedroom apartment. Which reinforces the idea that dreams can come true no matter how humble our beginnings. Her success at the same time reminds us of the fact that money can't buy happiness. Not to insinuate that this was her desire. But this is what many of us infer.
While we will continue to be inspired by Kate Spade's drive, ambition, business acumen, vivacious personality, professional presentation, and her major contribution to the fashion industry; our message to the leaders and influencers of the multi-trillion-dollar industry of fashion, is that we must reinforce the idea that "mind does matter". Beauty goes beyond being skin-deep. Beauty is more than the clothes we wear. Beauty is the acceptance of our total selves; mind, body and soul. That includes the good, the bad, and even the ugly challenges of life.
It is difficult to find peace in a world of "breaking news" shouted to us in sound bites. Life is filled with swift transition. It’s easy to lose our way in a cloud of disappointment and media over-saturation. However, if in this life only we have hope, then we are of all men most miserable. It is imperative that we hold onto to hope and retain God in our memory. The Bible says that "I will keep you in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on me."
Yes, it can be inferred that Kate Spade had happiness & peace simply because of her wealth and glamorous lifestyle. Yet her suicide reminds us that no matter how bad our problems are, there is always somebody else who has bigger problems. Let’s remember to pray for one another and most of all remember to never lose hope.
To the family of Ms. Spade our prayers and condolences are with you.
And to our dearly beloved Kate Spade, Rest in Peace.
